I was given this portrait by a cousin who inherited it from her mother who told her it was a portrait of our common great-grandmother. Her mother had always hung the picture in her house at the top of a staircase and had always said it was her grandmother, who had died in 1930 when she was ten; she knew her grandmother well and had no doubt this was her photo.
However… I also have a picture of our joint great-grandmother, a picture which I inherited from my grandmother, and it is completely different… even allowing for the fact that one is a photo and one is a painting on porcelain, they really do not look like the same person. However, another however, the woman in the photo my cousin gave me has a brooch… and I have that brooch…
I have no doubt that the picture I have rather than the photo I was given is my great-grandmother, I have other pictures of her through her life and there is no doubt it is the same woman… so who is the photograph of which my cousin gave me? My great grandmother’s sister maybe?
This I know is my great-grandmother… so who is the other woman, the other woman who without doubt has a connection to my family?
